Nanchang Overview

      Nanchang is the capital city of Jiangxi Province, one of the central cities of the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, the core city of Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Zone, and a national famous historical and cultural city named by the State Council. Covering an area of 7402 square kilometers, with a total population of 6.03 million, Nanchang is the political, economic, cultural, scientific, technological and transportation center of Jiangxi province.

A Historical City

       Founded in 202 BC, Nanchang boasts a history of over 2200 years, with rich cultural heritage and precious cultural imprints. Nanchang has numerous  historical and cultural relics, with more than 600 cultural sites. Tengwang Pavilion is known as one of the "three renowned towers along the south of Yangtze River". Xishan Longevity Palace is the birthplace of Taoist creed—purity, brightness, loyalty and filial piety. The archaeological discovery of Marquis of Haihun's tombs in the Han Dynasty shocked the world. The "August 1st Nanchang Uprising" started here, and the tradition of revolution has been passed down from generation to generation. It has become a world-famous hero city at home and abroad.

A Landscape City

        The water area of Nanchang accounts for nearly 30%, ranking first in the provincial capital of China. The Ganjiang River flows through the city, earning  Nanchang the title "water capital of China". To the west of the city lies Meiling's West Mountain. With a greening coverage rate of 43% and over 20% of its area dedicated to wetlands, Nanchang stands as an exemplar of environmental richness. Its air quality has consistently ranked among the top provincial capitals in China, maintaining the number-one position in Central China for seven consecutive years. Nanchang has earned several prestigious titles, including national civilized city, national health city, national forest city, national garden city, and one of the first batch of water-ecological civilized cities in China.

An Emerging Industrial City

        Nanchang offers vast potential for development, with a focus on building four emerging strategic industries: automotive and new energy vehicles, electronic information, biomedicine, and aviation equipment. Additionally, the city emphasizes the growth of four traditional industries where it has a competitive edge—green food, modern textiles, new materials, and electromechanical equipment manufacturing—alongside several production-oriented service industries, including industrial design, scientific and technological consulting, inspection and testing, information services, financial services, mass innovation, development, and intelligent logistics.

A Dynamic and Beautiful City

         Nanchang is the important node of “the Belt and Road”, also the vital central city of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the strategic pivot of the central region and the core city of Nanchang Metropolitan Area. In recent years, Nanchang has become a pilot demonstration city for over 20 national programs, including the national demonstration city for entrepreneurship and innovation in small and micro enterprises, the national pilot city for integrating science, technology, and finance, and the comprehensive pilot city for building a new open economic system.
